Shipping Your Motor Vehicle to Colombia

Are you considering shipping your vehicle to Colombia? Aside from the cost of shipping, there are also Customs regulations and road safety requirements that you should be aware of.

As an individual and non-diplomat you may only import new vehicles manufactured in the current year with 000 kilometers / mileage. Only diplomats who are duly registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs may import new or used motor vehicles in Colombia with a valid diplomatic permit.

Moving your household goods to Colombia

Before moving to Colombia, if you are not an Colombian citizen, you are required to have a visa to live and work there. The visa must be valid for at least 12 months.

Colombia Customs Service

As long as you are a Colombian citizen returning to Colombia and have lived outside Colombia for at least 3 years prior to relocation to Colombia, items will be duty and tax-free. Provided your household goods arrive a maximum of 30 days before your arrival or no more than 120 days after your arrival in Colombia, no duty or tax will need to be paid.

We use the best materials, and techniques in order to put you at ease through knowing that your goods will arrive safely. We have premium boxes and hardware, built to transport anything from flatscreens to artwork, to your fancy suit.

For your delicate and precious items, we custom-build wooden crates for maximum security. Every item moved will be export-wrapped or packed in a box. If you prefer to pack some of your goods yourself, we can provide you with the packing materials needed and a packing guide to help you with this.

Storing Your Belongings

We have storage facilities available in Colombia in case you are not in immediate need of your goods. We can store your items until you need them, at which point they are easily accessible.

Can my car be shipped to Colombia?

Yes, it can. But, as an individual and non-diplomat you may only import new vehicles manufactured in the current year with 000 kilometers / mileage. Restricted or dutiable items:

  • Firearms and collection weapons (authorization from the Colombian Ministry of Defense is required and must be obtained prior to import)
  • Bedroom sets (only one bedroom set per family member)
  • Only one type of major appliance can be imported, excluding televisions (3 maximum)

When can I expect my belongings to arrive in Colombia?

In general, these are expected average times to assist you in the planning process:

  • Bogota/Medellin/Cali: 5-6 weeks by sea freight
  • Barranquilla/Cartagena/Cucuta: 5-6 weeks by sea freight
  • Air freight: 2-5 business days

Am I able to store my goods in Colombia?

Yes, you can. We have facilities to store your goods for you from a week to several months.

Is there duty and tax that I must pay for my household goods when moving to Colombia?

It is possible. However, provided that you lived outside Colombia for at least 3 years, and have used your goods for at least six months prior to importing them, there will be no duty and or tax on your belongings.

Am I able to pack my belongings myself?

Yes, you can. If you prefer to pack some of your goods yourself, we can provide you with the packing materials needed and a packing guide to help you with this.

Am I able to have my container delivered directly to my home in Colombia?

Yes, provided the streets are wide enough and there is vehicle access to your home.
