Different Modes of Shipping

When inquiring into shipping freight internationally, it is important to understand the options for modes of shipping that are available to you. There are three main modes that are available by most of the reputable international shipping companies in Canada. These options are:

  • Air shipping
  • Freight/ocean shipping
  • Shipping by land

With each of these modes of shipping comes benefits and drawbacks. All of these modes can accommodate a full container load or a shared or consolidated container. Generally, for shipping services overseas, air and ocean shipping are the fastest and most cost effective methods. There are also different types of shipping containers for different types of cargo, for example, a refrigerated shipping container is likely the best method for shipping frozen goods.

Less Than Container Load Shipping (LCL)

An LCL (shared or consolidated container) is often the best method for someone who does not have enough goods for a full container load (FCL). This method is most commonly used for sea and land freight. Using this method, a portion of the container is filled with another person’s goods who are in a similar position. This method can be a significantly more cost effective method of shipping for the same service speed and quality as an FCL.
